Colleen Lee
1998 JC Scholar
The piano keys are black and white, yet pianist Colleen's world is always colourful. Starting to learn piano from age four, her lifelong interest eventually became her profession. The award- winning pianist now humbly attributes her achievements to "luck", insisting that "I believe I am very lucky; I have met many great teachers who have allowed me to learn from trial and error, guiding me to better paths." Funded by a Jockey Club Scholarship, she graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with first-class honours, and received a further scholarship from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund to continue her studies at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media in Germany.
Grateful for the support of the Scholarship, Colleen feels her studies in Germany helped take her career to yet another level. "The Scholarship gave me peace of mind; I could concentrate on learning music and participating in contests. I met the renowned pianist Arie Vardi in a competition and I was fortunate enough to be admitted to the school where he was teaching. Under his guidance, I was inspired to think beyond the routine of music to excel."
Colleen learned a lot from renowned pianist Arie Vardi in Germany.
Changing her role from student to teacher after returning to Hong Kong, unlike ordinary teachers, she did not require her students to have "good grades". What really mattered was encouraging her students to love and enjoy music. She believes that all music, whether classical or pop, creates positive energy and brings out people's strengths.
"I am not asking all students to be professional musicians, but I hope that music can actively influence their lives. This is my educational philosophy." Colleen once had a student who faced the choice between studying medicine or music. The student was encouraged to turn piano playing into a hobby which could act as a buffer against the pressure from studies and life. She now hopes that music can help other students face challenges in life with bigger hearts and more inclusive minds.
Colleen believes music allows people to vent their emotions, bring joy, and hold the community together.
