Jenny Cao

2023 JC Scholar

Tapping into the engineering world, a traditionally male-dominated industry, Jenny has studied hard to enrich her knowledge and make her dream come true. She hopes to be successful in the medical engineering field and give back to society through her enthusiasm and know-how.

Jenny has always had a passion for engineering and aspires to make significant contributions in the field of medical engineering one day.

Having achieved excellent results in the national college entrance examination in her home city of Chongqing, she could have chosen any first-tier university on the Mainland "but I have a soft spot for Hong Kong", she smiles. With her parents' encouragement and the financial assistance of her Scholarship, she decided to start her new academic year at HKUST. "When I was young, I had an asthma attack during a trip to Hong Kong," Jenny recalls. "I was rushed to the emergency room and successfully treated. The hospital I stayed in was neat and quiet. I was so impressed, and felt Hong Kong was a place with a distinctive blend of humanity and science."

With the support of the Scholarship, Jenny is able to pursue her dream at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Jenny has loved to build models and watch science programmes since childhood. Whatever furniture or equipment needed to be installed at home, she would take care of it. Her inquisitive personality led her to explore the world of engineering. "Fewer females are interested in the engineering field, which is still pretty much a man's world. Yet I like engineering as it's not only theoretical, but also puts theory into practice. I believe it makes real contributions to society." With the population ageing trend becoming more and more of a challenge, Jenny predicts that the medical and health industry will come into sharper focus, leading her to explore the medical engineering field. Aiming to broaden her international horizons through four years of university study, she's determined to improve the standard of domestic medical devices on the Mainland. She hopes to make a real difference in this field by connecting the medical engineering industries in Mainland China, Hong Kong and the world.

In her senior year of secondary school, Jenny's participation in the 4 x 100 relay race made her realise that hard work pays off.
