Experiential Learning Series — Empowering Youth Through Mental Wellness

2025-06-07

JC Scholars recently took part in an experiential learning programme at JC LevelMind Hub at Hong Kong Christian Service ("HKCS") Shamshuipo West Happy Teens Club.  The programme focused on youth mental wellness, allowing JC Scholars to gain a deeper understanding of the mental health challenges faced by young people and the services offered by JC LevelMind.

During their visit to the JC LevelMind Hub, JC Scholars had the opportunity to receive briefings by HKCS representatives and delve into the project's development and strategic approach to address youth mental health issues.  The learning experience also included guided tours of the JC LevelMind Hub and the "Exhibition: FAILURE REIMAGINED", which provided JC Scholars with further insight into the relationship between youths' experiences of failure and adversity and their mental wellness needs.

A significant aspect of this programme was the meaningful exchange with youth ambassadors who participated in the exhibition, where the theme of failure was central to the discussion.  JC Scholars also experienced the power of art as a medium for emotional expression.  They employed non-verbal communication and narrative therapy, allowing them to articulate their feelings in innovative and healing ways.

Launched in 2019, JC LevelMind addresses the mental health needs of young people aged 12-24 through a youth-friendly and stigma-free model.  Staffed by a multi-disciplinary team, the JC LevelMind Hubs provide one-stop services for prevention, early intervention and remedial support.  Hub users have reported a 43% reduction in symptoms of anxiety and a 32% decrease in stress levels.

Building on this success, JC LevelMind has expanded to 45 JC LevelMind Hubs across 18 districts and extended into the school setting in 2024.  Wellness hubs and wellness clubs co-created by students and teachers will be established in 130 secondary schools to promote mental health self-management and foster caring school environments.  In addition, the project in collaboration with "Open Up" and the JC LevelMind eClinic provides online and offline mental health services that are available 24/7 for young people.

Words from participating JC Scholars

  • It was very insightful and encouraging, and the experiences shown in the exhibition resonated with my past failures as well.

  • Thank you so much for providing this opportunity for me to re-define "failure". I'll definitely keep that in mind following the course of my life!

  • This was a very interesting and comforting experience that helped me understand how to better help myself and my peers. I also feel more enthusiastic and able to help others in my community.
